SPECIALIST NURSE, MATERNITY WARD

Responsibilities
- Adhere to nursing care vision, mission, goals, and objectives, aligning with the scope of nursing services; perform shift duties as assigned by the Unit Manager to ensure high‑quality care.
- Notify the unit manager when any situation change could impact the standards of care.
- Obtain and hand over patient progress reports, ensuring all doctor’s orders are followed before changing or taking over shifts and reporting any incidents or problems encountered.
- Visit patients with team members to assess conditions, re‑plan nursing care, and determine nursing priorities based on patient needs and staff availability.
- Provide personalized, attentive care to newborns and infants, practice holistic patient care, and maintain accurate documentation with timely reporting of abnormal findings.
- Deliver high‑quality maternity care, including emergency procedures, and ensure safe maternal and child health.
- Conduct nursing rounds, provide emotional support, accompany doctors, and assist in procedures as needed.
- Execute doctors’ orders, coordinate with team members, and foster effective communication with all disciplines, patients, and relatives to assure patient satisfaction.
- Supervise labor progress using portogram, assist in CTG interpretation, and manage complications such as preterm labor and hemorrhage.
- Guide and supervise new mothers on self‑care, newborn care, breastfeeding, family planning, and post‑natal home‑care education and support.
- Actively participate in patient and family health education, ward meetings, dialogue sessions, and hospital activities.
- Provide clear, compassionate, and culturally sensitive communication, ensuring patients understand their condition, treatment options, and care plan.
- Collaborate with the unit manager in administration, set care standards, and assume duties in the unit manager’s absence, including providing feedback and coordinating with consultants for efficient bed management.
- Charge accurately, incorporate charges for equipment and consumable items into patient charges, and verify their completeness.
Human Resources & Development
- Maintain personal and professional growth by keeping up to date with mandatory learning hours.
- Perform continuous professional development through annual competency evaluations and renew privileges every three years.
- Participate in and contribute to the unit’s teaching program and orientation of new staff.
- Supervise new graduate registered nurses, assistant nurses, midwives, care assistants, and student nurses to achieve clinical attachment objectives.
- Work with the unit manager to evaluate staff performance, provide constructive feedback, and optimize staff, supply, and service utilization.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of the nursing process, ensuring effective patient care and documentation.
- Participate in research initiatives and advocate for quality improvement through evidence‑based practice.
Policies, Procedures & Quality Improvement
- Participate in the review and revision of nursing policies, procedures, and work instructions to promote best practices.
- Inspect psychotropic drug inventory with the previous shift nurse, adhere to hospital policies, and conduct daily resuscitation trolley audits.
- Promote infection prevention and control by enforcing protocols, implementing surveillance activities, and demonstrating commitment.
- Maintain patient confidentiality regarding personal and medical history.
- Support continuous improvement activities such as quality assurance, infection control, and fire & safety programs, and conduct root‑cause analyses and incident reporting.
- Collaborate with the unit manager to collect and evaluate clinical and administrative data and participate in hospital‑wide quality surveys.
Facilities, Equipment & Safety
- Operate and maintain specialized equipment, guide new staff on their use, and keep accurate records.
- Collaborate with the unit manager to maintain equipment, medical supplies, consumable items, and drugs, ensuring proper functioning, service according to PPM schedules, and adequate stock.
- Notify biomedical personnel of faulty equipment and assist in equipment cleaning, disinfection, and proper usage.
- Participate in quarterly stock counts with finance staff.
- Adhere to occupational safety and health regulations, including use of protective equipment and patient safety initiatives.
Qualifications & Competencies
- Registered with the Nursing Board of Malaysia with a valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse and holding an Advance Diploma in Midwifery.
- At least 3 years of clinical experience with diverse clinical exposure.
- Certificates in BLS, ACLS, MTLS, PALS, and NRP (according to specialties).
- Completed Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative training (20‑ and 40‑hour modules) and lactation counseling courses.
- Proficient in writing and speaking in English and Bahasa Malaysia.
- Microsoft Office literacy, excellent leadership, interpersonal, communication, critical‑thinking, negotiation, and problem‑solving skills.
- Willingness to work scheduled hours, shifts, weekends, public holidays, and emergency calls.
- Passionate and committed to patient‑centered care, quality improvement, integrity, patience, and attention to detail.
