HEALTHCARE ASSISTANT, ACCIDENT & EMERGENCY

General Description

Provide basic nursing care in accordance with established standards, work collaboratively with team members, and report any incidents or issues to relevant authorities to ensure the delivery of high-quality patient care.

Job Description – Organization and Management

1. Provide basic nursing care that aligns with the vision, mission, philosophy, goals, and objectives of the nursing services and the hospital.
2. Notify the nursing leaders of any situations that impact the quality of care.
3. Obtain ward report and assignment at the beginning of each shift and perform additional tasks as assigned by the Unit Manager or Senior Registered Nurse.
4. Daily routine:
   • Conduct regular nursing rounds to assess patients’ needs and communicate with them and their families.
   • Prepare and tidy patients’ beds and linens as needed and organize patients’ belongings and furniture.
   • Disinfect the beds, furniture, and equipment after utilizing them.
   • Keep the ward, store, fridge, and its facilities clean and tidy.
   • Assist the patient with activities of daily living.
   • Answer phone calls and relay messages.
   • Attend patients’ call bell promptly.
   • Assist nurses in transporting patients to and from the operating theatre.
   • Escort patients to other services for diagnostic tests and from the ward to other areas upon discharge.
   • Dispatch specimens to the laboratory and collect results.
   • Collect pharmacy and surgical supplies from pharmacy and the store as required to maintain adequate stock levels for operations.
   • Send out portable oxygen tanks for refilling or exchange, ensuring a continuous supply for emergency needs.
5. Assist the trained staff in various aspects:
   • Carry out nursing care such as patient comfort, safety, nutrition, hygiene, admission, transfer, discharge, dressing, intravenous lines, catheterization, etc.
   • Cleans and disinfects the trolley and instruments after use and stores them properly.
   • Records the daily charges for the items used in the ward and updates the patients’ charges accordingly.
   • Maintains the record of intake and output chart for each patient.
   • Lifts, turns, and positions patients safely.
   • Accompanies the consultant in performing procedures and rounds in the absence of trained nurses.
6. Attend meetings held by the service.

Job Requirements

• Education: Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia; Certified healthcare assistants would be a priority.
• Knowledge and Experience: Experience working in a hospital setting is an advantage.
• Special Skills Required: Able to converse fluently and write in English language and Bahasa Malaysia.
