CARE ASSISTANT, GENERAL WARD

ORGANIZATION AND MANAGEMENT

1. Provide basic nursing care that aligns with the vision, mission, philosophy, goals, and objectives of the nursing services and the hospital.
2. Notify the nursing leaders of any situations that impact the quality of care.
3. Obtain ward report and assignment at the beginning of each shift and perform additional tasks as assigned by the Unit Manager or Senior Registered Nurse.
4. Daily routine: Conduct regular nursing rounds to assess patients’ needs and communicate with them and their families; prepare and tidy patients’ beds and linens as needed and organise patients’ belongings as well as furniture; disinfect beds, furniture, and equipment after use; keep the ward, store, fridge, and its facilities clean and tidy; assist the patient with activities of daily living; answer phone calls and relay messages; attend patient bell calls promptly; assist nurses in transporting patients to and from the operating theatre; escort patients to other services for diagnostic tests and from the ward to other areas upon discharge; dispatch specimens to the laboratory and collect results; collect pharmacy and surgical supplies from pharmacy and the store as required to maintain adequate stock levels for operations; send out portable oxygen tanks for refilling or exchange, ensuring a continuous supply for emergency needs.
5. Assist the trained staff in various aspects: perform patient comfort, safety, nutrition, hygiene, admission, transfer, discharge, dressing, intravenous lines, catheterisation, etc.; clean and disinfect the trolley and instruments after use and store them properly; record daily charges for items used in the ward and update patients’ charges accordingly; maintain record of intake and output chart for each patient; lift, turn, and position patients safely; accompany the consultant in performing procedures and rounds in the absence of trained nurses.
6. Attend meetings held by the service.

HUMAN RESOURCE AND DEVELOPMENT

1. Proactive in own learning and development, meeting the minimum requirement of 20 hours of continuing education per year.
2. Involve orienting new staff members to the ward routines.
3. Maintain a record of personal leave and training attendance.

POLICIES AND PROCEDURE

Adhere to the hospital's policies and nursing code of conduct, ensuring patient confidentiality and standard infection control practices are upheld.

FACILITIES AND EQUIPMENT

Assist the trained staff in managing the proper storage, condition, and availability of biomedical equipment in the unit, maintaining a sufficient supply of ward stock, and maintaining accurate records for equipment, medical supplies, and consumable item specimen collections.

SAFETY AND QUALITY IMPROVEMENT ACTIVITIES

1. Participate in new services, comply with 5S activities, patient safety policies, and adherence to ISO, MSQH, JCI, PSG, BFHI and NNA; ensure compliance with patient safety goals and occupational safety measures.
2. Adhere to the Occupational Safety and Health Act and Regulations 1994, take reasonable care at work, cooperate with employers, wear proper PPE, and follow all safety and health instructions and measures.
